The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf originally (and still colloquially) known as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is a regional, intergovernmental political and economic union that consists of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The council's main headquarter is in the city of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. The Charter of the GCC was signed on 25 May 1981, formally establishing the institution.

Arab Gulf leaders attend a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit in Riyadh, without the presence of Qatar's emir who decided to skip the summit. Qatar is locked in a bitter dispute with Saudi Arabia that has fractured the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and it has sent the minister of state for foreign affairs, Sultan al-Muraikhi instead to the gathering of heads of state.
The GCC was founded in 1980 as a bulwark against bigger neighbors Iran and Iraq, but the protracted row has undermined its role in regional affairs. (AFP/REUTERS)
